-An owner of a food-vending business says a rogue worker took off with his $100,000 truck and has been flipping burgers and appears to be pocketing his profits. The owner of Wall Street Burgers said his $100,000 truck has been taken by an employee.-
The bright orange Wall Street Burgers truck — which features a skateboarding bull on the side — went missing Sunday, but owner Moe Chowdhury said it’s been spotted this week doing brisk business in Manhattan.
“He’s been working and selling,” Chowdhury of Astoria, Queens, said Wednesday of his AWOL employee.
He said fans of his burgers have been tweeting him sightings of the truck, from Hells Kitchen to Tribeca, but he’s yet to track it down.
Chowdhury said the worker was supposed to meet him in the Financial District at 5 p.m. Sunday to return the truck, but never showed up.
“He made me go all around New York City looking for him,” Chowdhury said.
Chowdhury said he tried to file a stolen vehicle report at the 114th Precinct in Astoria, but cops told him it’s more of an unauthorized use case.
“They said, ‘Come back to us in another week if he doesn’t show up,’” Chowdhury said.
“This is my business. This is my livelihood. I have two young daughters,” said Chowdhury, who quit his job as an information technology specialist at the American Stock Exchange to start his burger-truck business last May.
Chowdhury declined to identify the employee, but said he had fired the man once before. He said he hired him back two weeks ago after hearing his sob story.
“He was crying, telling me he was having family issues and how bad he needed the job,” Chowdhury said. “I felt bad for the guy so I gave him another shot. This is how he pays me back.”
